Hi Everyone! Turns out I never posted on 4th of July this year! Oops! It always seems like it will be a lot so i procrastinate. Totally being honest here.
The featured image is of me at my table at Mueller Neighborhood Association‘s 4th of July Parade and Festival.
What was at my table?
- ARR had new bin brochures for our three carts: trash, recycling and compost. They also had super new flyers on the trash cart sizes and the price differences. I love this new flyer!
- I also have a sign holder that includes the next bulk collection date. Bulk collection is for large trash pickup that happens twice a year.
- I also had my new reusables/refuse/repair display board out since it was created for the Earth Day theme for this year, “Planet vs. Plastics.”
Questions I had:
- Milk cartons: Milk cartons cannot be recycled. They are plastic-coated paper and go in the trash.
- Styrofoam: Styrofoam (especially meat trays) can be recycled at the Austin Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center (RRDOC), but not in the blue single-stream recycling carts.
- Textiles: Fabrics can be recycled, just not in our curbside blue bins, the single-stream system. You can take them to Goodwill or the Austin Recycle & Reuse Drop-off Center (RRDOC) by appointment.
- Plastic bags and film: I’m still getting a lot of questions about plastic bags especially Amazon mailers. Take all the food bits, receipts, stickers, tags, etc. off and you can drop these off at any bag recycling station at most stores.
- Shoes: I had several discussions on shoes and recycling or repairing them. I love to share about Austin Shoe Hospital.
- My demo broken sneaker in my “What Do I Do With This?” box helps initiate conversations and I had Austin Shoe Hospital listed in the repair section of my new trifold board.
- Lids: Lids are still confusing. Leave them on if it’s the same material (plastic on plastic) but take it off if it’s different (metal lid on glass bottle).
Fun that happened:
A fun and exciting reuse situation that happened was that the kids’ art table ran out of trays and plates for a paint activity so they borrowed/reused stuff from my demo box!
