Cut your trash open just in case something blows away or falls out of trash. We never know what will get popped out of the trash truck, blown around at the landfill, ripped open coming out of a dumpster, or blown away in travel.
This can be tags, hair ties, six pack rings, etc.
This can help reduce entanglement, which is when a creature becomes tangled in our trash such as fishing line, six-pack rings, hair ties, milk jug rings, clothing tag loops, etc.
It more commonly happens to marine animals to the point where they cannot go up for air, swim, or eat. It can also happen to land animals like squirrels and foxes getting trapped in yard, clothesline, etc. left out in the yard. I won’t share images but you can Google “animal entanglement” and see examples.
I’ve seen enough videos on Instagram of saving animals that I have scissors in the car. Ideally I would have a small pair in my purse too but it’s too tiny. The car is one small “little more green” step I personally have taken in this area beyond trying to be more diligent on monitoring my trash.
