Valentine’s Cards That Aren’t Valentine’s

Today I mailed Valentine’s to my extended family.

Valentine cards don’t have to be the mass manufactured holiday-specific cards stores sell. You can invoke the same feeling with the color scheme of love, or make it even more personal by finding a card or gift that exemplifies a love of the person you are sending a card to.

These cards by Michael H. McKann are actual photographs on blank cards from Central Market. I love them because the images are gorgeous, they’re great as a card, the recipient can reuse the photo or frame the card, and they’re cheaper than most box-store cards. Don’t get me started on Papyrus… Of course, shopping small and more local (Central Market is a Texas grocery store chain vs Target or Hallmark) is always good. You can do an internet search or go through your own books for poetry, verse or scripture to include. This is also an individual photographer so I love that I can support their work directly in this way.

Here’s the card back if you are interested. It says these pink variegated/splotchy flowers are “Rock-N-Roll” roses.

My envelope stamp is an Olive Ridley Sea Turtle. I like it to order stamps from USP that have meaning and or support causes. They mail in paper mailers that can be recycled, which is a great improvement, years ago the stamps were in celophane that had to be trashed so I’m really grateful for the greener improvements in stamps. I have found that asking in local post offices shows a limited and more general supply of topics versus causes and highlights. There are LOVE stamps you can order and the post offices seem to run out of those so if you like those, order them.
