Recycle String Lights & Restring Your Tree

The original lights on this estimated 8-year-old tree half went out; the first two tiers died. So we cut all the lights off with wire cutters to restring it with new string lights.

The strings were intricately woven into the branches and there were little plastic clips also holding them on. This just made an absolute horrendous mess when we undid the string lights. My 18-year-old 7 foot slim tree when it was about 8 years old had two of its three tiers die and I cut the lights off with my mom and we restrung that tree. I don’t remember there being this much waste and there weren’t plastic clips on our main tree, the little one is my son’s, so each tree is different.

My 8 year old had no problem using wire cutters to cut these off and enjoyed it actually. He was excited to pick out what color his new strings would be! Don’t forget to include your kids in your green/zero waste activities. They’re the next generation of zero waste leaders and they learn by doing and seeing. It doesn’t do them any good for you to take care of these things while they’re at school or practice.

String lights go in electronics recycling either to the Recycle and Reuse Dropoff Center or to Goodwill.

Do not put them in your blue recycling carts, they are tanglers and they can’t be processed in any single stream recycling process anyway. Happy Holidays! #lights #stringlights #christmaslights #electronics #declutter
