Preschool Tip: Pip-Squeaks Washable Markers

Pipsqueaks are great for preschool kids learning to write. The shorter length is easier for them to learn proper grip and control. Check with your neighbors if they may either need yours, or if you want some from your neighbors. Our school supplies get sent home every year and these are what my son was using until right now. We just gave them to our next door neighbor. Austin Creative Reuse has these if you want to try them out, or if you run out of a particular color a lot like we need lots of reds, it’s a great place to try something new. You can only buy one or a few of something to give it a try.

If you aren’t in Austin, or have a creative reuse location near you, most stores carry Pip-squeaks (with the hyphen). I do also like that they have more colors than the traditional marker set since I love colors.

Crayola canceled its marker recycling program during covid and has not reactivated it so these go in the trash once they run out of ink unless you are willing to pay $170 for a Terracycle box. Markers are another reason I prefer colored pencils since there’s less waste overall. Crayons maybe too, those can be remelted put it’s harder to keep a fine tip on them if you are particular about staying in the lines.
