Liquid hand soap: refills vs new pumps

Liquid hand soap: refills all the way! If you choose to use liquid hand soap, find one you like that sells refills too.

Refills are going to be more cost effective and save material in the long run. Bar soap in general tends to be more zero waste overall even if you get one shrink wrapped in plastic though hopefully you can find them loose or in a cardboard box that can be recycled. In bar soap, there’s the possibility for less fragrance and dye as well.

Sometimes you need liquid soap so if you do, find one with a refill option that works for your nose, hands and budget. Pick what is most important to you.

Pumps cannot be recycled, they are tanglers in the recycling process and they are a composite material of a metal spring and plastic tubing. So your pumps will need to go in the trash. You can recycle an empty, clean and dry soap dispenser bottle.

Keep your seasonal soap dispensers to reuse as well with your favorite refillable soap. Don’t forget to keep any clippy things that will keep the pump from depressing while it’s in storage.
