Kirby Hall School had a great time at Austin Creative Reuse this morning for a field trip.

The kids learned about the store and it’s diversion goal, volunteered to sort pencils by temperature: warm, cool and neutral, did a scavenger hunt, and got to tour the space as well as shop!
Many parent drivers were needed and only 2 families out of 17 had been to ACR before so it was a great way to share a small local sustainable business with the Kirby Hall School families.
We found some fun pencils during sorting and our carpool buddy found a ball of giant yarn she called her meatball plus a cat-shaped massage tool.
I really loved two things that reflected well on both these groups’ missions. Austin Creative Reuse had the kids do a volunteer project instead of making something or just shopping/buying, and the large volunteer base is what makes ACR possible. The kids gave back instead of receiving. I also loved that Kirby Hall School has great Makerspace and Art programs so the kids had a solid foundation in colors and organizing to be able to do the work so quickly and well. Many of Kirby Hall School’s lessons cross over into other areas. Sustainability and reuse are big parts of the curriculum and Specials at the school.
